It’s finally done!!! There was a moment in time when I thought our modern black kitchen was never going to be finished. Then when everything but the dishwasher panel was installed, we had a leak in the kitchen. Needless to say, we had a lot of setbacks and COVID related delays, but I’m happy to say that the kitchen is finally complete! Sources are linked at the bottom of the post, but let me know if you have any questions!
When I dreamed up this modern and moody kitchen, I knew we had to find a statement countertop that would compliment the matte black cabinetry. My Pinterest board was filled with modern European kitchens and I started to really covet all black kitchens. However, I didn’t want it to be too glossy or dark and was also terrified to do gray. Gray isn’t a color I usually lean towards because it’s hard to find the perfect shade that’s not too warm or cool. When I went to look at porcelain countertops that all changed when I saw Sapienstone’s Pietra Grey natural. It’s unbelievably beautiful and looks so natural with a matte/no shine finish, but it’s easy to maintain unlike marble!
Once we decided that’s what we wanted, we had to find a fabricator. That was a little tough for us, but after getting a few quotes we found a great company that did our countertops with the most beautiful 2” mitered edges. If you’re thinking about porcelain countertops it’s important to note that the fabrication cost is a bit more than quartz. That’s something we considered, but we loved the look and the low maintenance factor of Sapienstone so much. The waterfall island took my breath away when it was installed and the subtle veining in the porcelain is so realistic! Unlike most of the quartz countertops I looked at, the veining is so much more realistic and doesn’t look “stripey.” Trust me, I looked at countertops more times than I can count and this is the most natural looking countertop I saw.
To clean the countertops we use Zep window cleaner- that’s it! It has been so incredibly easy to maintain. After living in homes with marble countertops, I don’t think we could ever go back to a natural stone after having these porcelain countertops. They are amazing! Sapienstone offers many styles and colors- check out their website and you can find a dealer near you. It’s also important to note that Sapienstone can also be used in bathrooms or outdoors! The piece of porcelain in our kitchen behind the sink actually extends to the outside so there’s a small bar area outside. The slabs cannot be altered by light and they’re resistant to thermal shock so you can set a hot pots and pans can be set on the surface. Overall, I would highly recommend Sapienstone if you’re looking for something with a natural look but need a durable product.
Below, I’ve linked all of the decor items and sources for appliances, flooring, etc. The kitchen company we used for our custom cabinetry is H&D Kitchen based out of Boca Raton, FL. They did an amazing job and we love the flat front cabinets! The fronts were made in Italy and the boxes were locally made. H&D put them all together. Check back as I will be updating my site with a review our our microwave, oven, and other appliances soon!
