We had these nightstands for years, but when we moved to Florida last year and started on our modern remodel, they just didn’t fit in. To bring them up to date without splurging on a new set of nightstands, I simply painted them matte black and gold! In today’s post I’m sharing my secrets to painting furniture matte black with finishes that will last.
Last summer when I painted these, I couldn’t find matte black paint anywhere. Instead of driving to another Home Depot, I decided to try chalkboard paint with a matte finish. I’d used chalkboard paint for other projects in the past and figured it would be fine. To my delight, it was more than fine and turned out amazing! The key to a long lasting matte black finish I’ve found is using the matte clear coat. On the nightstands I used 2 coats and did a 3rd on the top since we set things on them and use them every day.
PREP WORK //
The only prep work that I did for these was a light sand and a good scrub! I always use Trader Joe’s multipurpose cleaner- it’s amazing for dust!
PAINTING //
For these nightstands, I applied 1 coats of the matte black paint. It goes on very blue at first but not to worry- it will dry matte black! I used these sponge rollers and they gave it a really nice smooth finish! I also used the sponge roller for the top coat. For the hardware, I used this gold spray paint. I tried at least 5 before deciding this was the one! It’s a perfect bronze finish and I love the smaller can for a project like this. That’s it! We’ve had these nightstands in our room for almost a year now and they only have a few teeny tiny scratches! We use the Trader Joe’s cleaner to wipe them down every other week and it doesn’t leave streaks at all. Below you can find the links for all of the paint and home decor in our main bedroom. Happy DIY’ing!
