I found this painting on Tiktok and knew I needed it in our home! The black version was sold out, so I decided to make one of my own that was the perfect size for our modern home office. We just moved the Minsmere cabinet I painted black into the office for more storage and the only thing missing was some modern abstract artwork! In today’s post I’m sharing how I created this painting and all of the supplies I used.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED //
Canvas (I used 30x40)
Pencil
Tape Measure
HOW TO CREATE //
First you want to paint your canvas with a solid color. I used the Mars Black acrylic paint and a 3” paint brush. I painted the sides of the canvas first.
After your canvas dries, you’ll need to make a grid so that your swatches are evenly spaced and level. The spacing will depend on the size of your canvas and how close you want the swatches. I spaced them out 4”. Use a pencil to make a small mark.
Next, you need to mix your acrylic paint with the acrylic medium. I just eyeballed this and slowly added the acrylic paint. Keep in mind the acrylic medium/paint mixture will dry darker than it appears.
After it’s fully mixed, add a small amount of the mixture to your palette knife and gently press it onto the canvas. I did a few test swatches on a piece of cardboard first.
Let it dry and hang! Both of the paintings I did took about 24 hours to completely dry.
That’s it! Make sure to tag me on Instagram or Tiktok if you try this!

I’ve been going crazy over checkerboard home decor lately. It’s so fun and adds the perfect pop of pattern! I’ve found a few planters online with this motif but none large enough for our patio. This cement Target planter was on sale so I thought- I HAVE to try it! This project ended up being SO EASY other than the hiccup I had with the Cricut machine. New software updates helped, but keep reading to see how I made this checkerboard planter!
