I’ve been going crazy over checkerboard home decor lately. It’s so fun and adds the perfect pop of pattern! I’ve found a few planters online with this motif but none large enough for our patio. This cement Target planter was on sale so I thought- I HAVE to try it! This project ended up being SO EASY other than the hiccup I had with the Cricut machine. New software updates helped, but keep reading to see how I made this checkerboard planter!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Cricut & Removable Vinyl or Painter’s Tape (I found these vinyl stickers online but I’m not sure how/if they could be removed easily!
Painter’s Tape (You could also use this cut into squares instead of the vinyl cutouts!
Plant- I used a monstera!
HOW TO:
If you’re using a Cricut, you’ll need to cut your squares out first. I had absolutely no reason to use 1.5” squares, I just winged it and it happened to work out perfectly.
Apply the squares to your planter in a checkerboard pattern. Don’t press them too hard onto the planter, just make sure all 4 sides of the sticker are adhered. At the bottom, they might be a little uneven if your planter doesn’t have straight sides like the one I used.
Use extra vinyl or painters tape to cover the top of the planter.
Use one light coat of spray paint! Apply the paint in a sweeping motion to avoid overspray. If you want the paint to go all the way to the bottom of the planter, prop your planter up on something like a spare paint can.
Remove the stickers as quickly as you can using tweezers. You don’t want to leave the vinyl on the planter for too long as it can remove the factory finish it had on it! I carefully removed the stickers after the paint dried for about 10 minutes.
After the first coat is completely dry and all stickers have been removed, apply the matte clear coat.
Add your plant and enjoy!
That’s it! This DIY was so easy! If you have to cut squares from painter’s tape it might take a little bit longer, but just ask a friend to help!
