Jett had been sleeping in his crib with the toddler conversion piece on it for over a year so we decided it might be time to upgrade! We were supposed to be getting a king size bed (our first!) for our main bedroom, so we decided to try to get Jett’s big boy room ready by the time the new bed was coming so he could have ours. Well, 2021 shipping delays had other plans but we went ahead and spruced his room up since we had been hyping him up about it for awhile! In today’s post you can see the before and after, more details about the DIY’s, and shop all of the pieces in his new room!
The headboard is actually a (sort of) simple DIY! It would’ve been much easier to affix the slats to the wall however, since I was installing the DIY neon sign I needed a little space behind the slats. So I used 3/4” plywood and striped it down to 1” pieces for the slats and affixed it to 3 1”x2” boards. I mounted the “headboard” right above the baseboards. It turned out even better than I had imagined and he absolutely loves it!
The DIY sign was a little bit harder DIY project than I expected. I freehanded the outline of the letters onto the wrong board (it was too thick), so I had to use tracing paper and pencil to copy my original freehand onto a thinner piece of plywood! It wasn’t difficult to cut out with a jigsaw but definitely time consuming. You had to go very slow on the sharp curves otherwise the wood will break. After that I used a drimmel to smooth out the super sharp curves, sanded it many times, and painted the front and back white. After that, I attempted to put a strip of LED lights onto it from Amazon. The first strip was super inexpensive and didn’t work once applied. I got a more expensive version that has an app to control them and they work perfectly! You can change the brightness, color, etc and Jett LOVES them!
