Right before listing our home for sale, I wanted to spruce up our master bedroom. It was one of the rooms in our house I had neglected after getting our furniture and never truly finished it, so that was my main priority before taking photos of our home. Since we moved in, Mr. Jones and I have decided we want to transition our décor from traditional to modern, so right now we’re mixing the two. It isn’t easy to mix traditional and modern pieces, but today I’m going to share some tips with you that helped me to redecorate our bedroom in a “transitional” style that we love!
KEEP IT SIMPLE
For me, this is the key to mixing modern and traditional pieces successfully! Before, our nightstands were too cluttered and the decor didn’t match. Skyler had his watch box on his nightstand and I had a tray with random objects that just collected crap. I love a decorative tray, but putting one on the nightstand isn’t ideal because it becomes a clutter collector. No, thank you.
The first thing I looked for were matching lamps that could go on both nightstands to fill that space and add some height. At the same time, I looked for some decorative objects but wanted something that would fill the space and was also simple. Not only does this keep you from spending an insane amount of money on small updates, but it also looks better! Remember, less is more.
SMALL CHANGES MAKE A BIG IMPACT
Keep in mind when updating your bedroom (or any room in the house), that small changes can make a big impact! Simply removing the clutter from my nightstand and getting these beautiful brass and glass lamps was a game changer! The ambiance from the lamps alone is so calming and freshened up the room immediately!
ADD SOME GREENERY
Greenery adds the perfect pop of color to a monochromatic bedroom! These small fiddle leaf plants were the PERFECT nightstand accessory because not only are they a great size, but they look so real. They also come in very simple white vases- yes, please! I sat them each on two books that I had in the attic so that they were the right height next to the lamps I got. I was going to cover the books with a watercolor paper so that they would go with the bedding, but I really liked the pop of color for summer!
PLAY WITH PATTERN AND TEXTURE
Our entire home is mostly white mixed with a little bit of black and while that might sound boring, it totally isn’t when you mix patterns and texture! I realized awhile ago that I never get tired of looking at black and white and since then, our home has been monochromatic. To jazz up our bedding, I added black and white stripe duvet, a black and white french stripe pillow, and mixed in some black and white polka dot pillow cases. While it may sound like a lot, when paired with mostly white everything else, they work beautifully together! You can play with the scale of the prints to make a room more youthful for a kids room, too!
To add in a little bit of texture, we have the linen portion of the bed mixed with the chunky knit blanket. I love adding a knit blanket just about anywhere all year around but especially in the winter! They’re just so cozy and warm up a room instantly. The one we have is from Pottery Barn, we’ve had it for 3 years, washed it a million times, and it’s still as good as new!
I hope you enjoyed this little master bedroom update post! If you want to see how it looked before, check out this post. Hopefully next time I’m sharing a bedroom update, it will be from a new house! Have a great day, y’all!
