The guest bedroom in our California home was a complete mess and had become what I jokingly called our “furniture graveyard.” All of the furniture that didn’t have a place in our home ended up in there with a deflated air mattress. Before we listed our house for sale we obviously had to do something about it- and quick with a low budget! Today I’m sharing how I transformed this space for under $400 and some tricks to stage a bedroom with an air mattress!

I had two weeks to stage this room as a bedroom and I didn’t want to spend a lot since we were moving soon after we sold the house. Two weeks seems like a sufficient amount of time but in the midst of COVID-19 it was a little crazy! Some of the decor ended up coming the day that we scheduled photos of our home! To keep the budget low, I bought bedding from Amazon and borrowed a duvet insert from my mother in law. It was actually the wrong size and not as fluffy as I would have liked- but I made it work! My best advice when sticking to a budget is to accept that you’ll have to sacrifice some things from the get go. In this case it was a real mattress- ha!
I used an air mattress because we already had one. I knew the air mattress was taller than most but what I didn’t plan on was for it to stick out on the front and the back. It kind of stuck out further than the platform bed frame, but again sometimes you just have to make it work when you have a tight budget and timeline. Since a regular queen fitted sheet wouldn’t fit onto the air mattress- I bought a super deep fitted sheet in a king size to make sure it would cover the entire air mattress- it worked perfectly! To hide the ridges in the air mattress I used a king size wool blanket that we had in the closet. It was thick enough to make the air mattress look smooth!
I really love how it turned out! I can’t wait to use this platform bed frame in an actual room with a real mattress (lol) but for now it’s in storage. Hopefully we will be able to get it out soon when we find a home here in Florida! Fingers crossed!
