Since I started working from home I’ve never really had a space of my own. I’d spend hours sitting on the sofa working on my computer and I always felt so unmotivated and way too cozy! So a few months ago I set out to find a desk that would work in our guest bedroom. I wanted to DIY something so it wouldn’t be too expensive and the perfect size. Back in March I was actually having a really bad day and decided to go thrifting to boost my mood and I found the perfect console to use as a desk!
I actually passed this console up at first but after I went home I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I realized it would fit perfectly in our guest bedroom and would be so easy to paint, so I went back and to my luck it was still there! It was only $40! After that, I randomly stumbled upon another secondhand furniture store. I could not make this up- it was almost too good to be true! The second shop had really awesome mid century modern finds and wayyyy in the back of the shop I found this amazing chair for $50!
To paint the desk, I just used this chalk paint. I had never used it before but it has good reviews and I love Annie Sloan chalk paint! It’s so nice that you don’t have to sand it. I just clean it really well beforehand and then use a 4” sponge roller to roll it on. I sealed it with this matte topcoat that I also used on my nightstands and our vanity in the guest bathroom. It turned out even better than I had imagined!
Since I only spent $40 on the desk, I decided to have a piece of marble cut for the top. For projects that are small like this one, you can often find remnants at fabricator shops for less! They have pieces leftover from other projects so you don’t have to purchase an entire slab. The top was $240 which was a splurge but if I’m going to stare at it all day I figured that was worth it! I found similar consoles that you can use as a desk as well as a similar chair, shop them all below!
