Growing up we made Christmas cookies every year and still carry-on the tradition with our kids! The Christmas cookie recipe came from the back of a cookie cutter box and it is absolutely delicious! Luckily our neighbor saved the recipe and I wanted to share it with y’all so you too can make these yummy Christmas cookies. I love to individually package them for teachers in a nice basket with gift cards or gift to our neighbors and friends, too!
INGREDIENTS //
1/2 cup shortening or butter
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 2/3 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sour cream
BAKING INSTRUCTIONS //
Mix butter and sugar together.
Add eggs and vanilla, mix until smooth.
Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sour cream (Add sour cream a little bit at a time).
Mix all ingredients until dough is in a ball form.
If dough is too loose, add more flour.
Refrigerate dough for 2 hours.
Roll out dough to 1/4” thick.
Heat oven to 425.
Bake cookies 4-6 minutes (the bottom should be light brown, the top should be almost white).
Allow cookies to cool before decorating.
To make things even easier, I like to cover our entire dining table with brown kraft paper! I use blue painter’s tape so that the paper is secured and last year we even added a row of parchment paper so we had a section for rolling out dough and cutting cookies. It made things so much easier and the mess was cleaned up SO quickly! Below you can shop some of my favorite cookie cutters, sprinkles, and Christmas cookie decorating must-haves!
